Archive for February, 2010

I found this presentation very informative. In an era of national debate concerning health care reform we should talk more about the drivers of the high cost of care. What do you think?

Nutrition for a Healthy Heart, an informational conference call with Gary Jones, MD.

The former President gave us a gift on February 11, 2010. President Clinton was hospitalize for a clogged artery just two years after he received by-pass surgery. This could raise the awareness of Americans. Lifestyle matters!  This caused me to Stumble on a common sense lecture by Dr.Klaper.

What you will find in this video is some common sense food for thought. Not sure how much I agree with all of it, but let me know what you think? This video was produced by Michael Klaper, M.D.  and is called A Diet for All Reasons. It is consistent with the belief that we need to review our importance of nutrition and our understanding of what we really need eat to run our body? As for me, I could not be a vegan. But there is no doubt the amount of  animal fat we consume as a percentage of our diet is out of balance compared to fruits, vegetables and nuts and grains. I also liked the concept of balancing our diet of between cooked and uncooked food. How can we get more fresh, raw food compared to processed and cooked food? I think the key is a balanced diet and lifestyles.  He did not say much about exercise. Seems to me fitness is also important now that we use machines to do all the heavy work.

I disagree with his population control concept. Funny how some people think it is unnatural for man to interfere with nature, but also think man should interfere with man’s nature. A higher power than us controls that.

So thanks again Mr Clinton. It is a simple choice. Follow the “smartest President” ever

or learn how to eat healthy.

Is Obesity a Problem?

Are you kidding me! Not here in the United States. Maybe in some other continent.

Per the Cleveland Clinic, “obesity rates are soaring among children and teens. As a result, type 2 diabetes and other chronic ailments are becoming more common among young people. Our kids may turn out to be the first generation in modern history to live shorter lives than their parents.”

The easiest way to determine if you’re not obese is by calculating your body mass index (BMI), the ratio of your weight to your height. Adults with a BMI of 25 or higher are considered overweight; with a BMI of 30 or higher, they’re considered obese. (Get your BMI with our online BMI calculator.)

If you think about it, the baby boomers are the last generation to have any part of their life without processed foods. Beginning in the 1950′s we began to switch over from local farms, fresh made meals to canned, frozen, freeze-dried, fortified…etc meals. With both mom and dad working longer and harder outside the home, our children are rushed from soccer fields, baseball diamonds, swimming pools and gyms passed the drive-thru so mom and dad can get home to finish homework, attend the PTA, fix things around the house or get on that all important conference call for their boss. Before you beat yourself up parents… per the Associated Press even the first family is struggling with this one.

AP – “First lady Michelle Obama framed her national campaign against childhood obesity in intensely personal terms Thursday, relating that her own daughters were starting to get off-track before the family’s pediatrician gave her a wake-up call and warned her to watch it.”

Something has to change.  My kids are all grown up. I can only start to work on myself. What about you?

During a presentation by Gary Jones, MD. last week, I learned that 23% of Americans suffer from high blood pressure. So this is a common question and a significant contributor to employer’s health insurance plans and the fitness of the employees who participate in them.

Of course you should discuss this condition with your doctor, but to be a smart health care consumer, you should do your own research. I would like to share one small piece of  information that is publicly available. It seems to me that common sense on what we eat and how much we exercise could go a long way. Watch this! Or pay for the insurance cost to have the pharmaceutical companies help you later.
