9 Ingredients to avoid in processed foods

If you know me at all, you know that I’m an advocate for whole, unprocessed foods.  However, many of us inevitably turn to packaged or processed foods when we are short on time.  Maybe we grab a frozen dinner or pizza for a quick dinner for our family.  Maybe we grab a quick nutrition bar to satiate our hunger until we can sit down for a real meal.  Or maybe, we just don’t like to cook.  Whether we like it or not, packaged and processed food has become a huge part of our food industry and, as a result, a part of many of our diets.Although there are some brands that I hugely advocate for, there are many more that border on outright unhealthy and “scary.”  Many packaged foods that seem healthy often contain fillers, preservatives and other ingredients you don’t want in your diet. It is always preferable to choose products that have only a handful of ingredients, all of which should be recognizable.  One test to know whether an ingredient is healthy is to ask yourself whether your grandmother would recognize it.  If not, there is a good chance the ingredient is less natural food and more man-made chemical.  Another good test is whether or not you can easily pronounce the ingredient.  If you feel like you need a science degree to pronounce it properly, chances are the ingredient is worth avoiding.

If you do have to resort to a processed food for a snack or dinner (anything canned, packaged, etc.), try to avoid those that contain the ingredients listed in the following chart.  Although this isn’t an exhaustive list, these ingredients are some of the most highly processed and least healthy of all:

Ingredient Why it is Used Why it is Bad
Artificial Colors
  • Chemical compounds made from coal-tar derivatives to enhance color.
  • Linked to allergic reactions, fatigue, asthma, skin rashes, hyperactivity and headaches.
Artificial Flavorings
  • Cheap chemical mixtures that mimic natural flavors.
  • Linked to allergic reactions, dermatitis, eczema, hyperactivity and asthma
  • Can affect enzymes, RNA and thyroid.
Artificial Sweeteners
(Acesulfame-K, Aspartame, Equal®, NutraSweet®,  Saccharin, Sweet’n Low®, Sucralose, Splenda® & Sorbitol)
  • Highly-processed, chemically-derived, zero-calorie sweeteners found in diet foods and diet products to reduce calories per serving.
  • Can negatively impact metabolism
  • Some have been linked to cancer, dizziness hallucinations and headaches.
Benzoate Preservatives(BHT, BHA, TBHQ)
  • Compounds that preserve fats and prevent them from becoming rancid.
  • May result in hyperactivity, angiodema,  asthma, rhinitis, dermatitis, tumors and  urticaria
  • Can affect estrogen balance and levels.
Brominated Vegetable Oil(BVO)
  • Chemical that boosts flavor in many citric-based fruit and soft drinks.
  • Increases triglycerides and cholesterol
  • Can damage liver, testicles, thyroid, heart and kidneys.
High Fructose Corn Syrup
(HFCS)
  • Cheap alternative to cane and beet sugar
  • Sustains freshness in baked goods
  • Blends easily in beverages to maintain sweetness.
  • May predispose the body to turn fructose into fat
  • Increases risk for Type-2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer
  • Isn’t easily metabolized by the liver.
MSG(Monosodium Glutamate)
  • Flavor enhancer in restaurant food, salad dressing, chips, frozen entrees, soups and other foods.
  • May stimulate appetite and cause headaches, nausea, weakness, wheezing, edema, change in heart rate, burning sensations and difficulty in breathing.
Olestra
  • An indigestible fat substitute used primarily in foods that are fried and baked.
  • Inhibits absorption of some nutrients
  • Linked to gastrointestinal disease, diarrhea, gas, cramps, bleeding and incontinence.
Shortening, Hydrogenated and Partially Hydrogenated Oils
(Palm, Soybean and others)
  • Industrially created fats used in more than 40,000 food products in the U.S.
  • Cheaper than most other oils.
  • Contain high levels of trans fats, which raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol, contributing to risk of heart disease.

Have you checked your ingredient lists recently? Do they contain any of the above? Have you tried cutting some of these ingredients out?

The President demonstrated the limits of his vision, weakness in his faith in America this week during his speech to NASA.

    Dear Mr President:

“Some people never see stars nor do they journey far in their quest. Some men think themselves practical and hardheaded because they keep their eyes down on the material facts of bread and butter, dollars and cents. They see the desk light or the traffic light and they govern themselves accordingly. But even if they do by chance lift up their eyes to the stars of hope and promise, they discern nothing and do nothing. It is good to have your feet on the ground, to see facts as they are, to do your job as it comes. But it takes a higher wisdom to catch the message of the stars and to translate it into action.” 1953, The Very Rev. Frank Dean Gifford, Ph.D, Philadelphia, PA.

NASA’s maned mission to the the moon is the mission of America. We look up to the stars and see the future, the possibilities not yet conceived. A new beginning for mankind, and men of faith and hope and promise. Look again Mr. President at the stars. Search your sole for the guidance. Believe in us and America.

Obama extends healthcare rights to gay partners

“Hospitals that accept Medicare and Medicaid payments from the US government must let patients choose which persons, including gay and lesbian partners, can visit them and help make critical health decisions”, President Barack Obama said Thursday

Do as I say, not as I Do!

I think this sends a bad message from the White House.First, are there any hospitals that deny visitations? This is quite insulting to this industry. Second, anyone can be given the power-of-attorney now to share critical health decision access now. What does this change? It is just pandering to a constituent group for political reasons?

Third, and even more disturbing, when did a presidential memo become law. Is he more powerful than Congress now?

Finally, we were told that medicaid / medicare are just “insurance programs” administered by private companies. Fully or partially funded by the Government. Right! So when did the Government take over private hospitals and control their operations? I would love to see the response from AHA now…after they gave the President political support on his health care bill. I understand the medicaid / medicare administrators can impose rules to qualify for reimbursement of a patient’s bill… if the hospital (or provider) does not qualify, the claim will not be reimbursed by the medicaid / medicare, and the treatment bill will be the responsibility of the patient. So if hospitals do not comply, we could have some very unhappy patients. But unhappy with who?

Does anyone wonder why providers are so concerned about the governments expansion to provide more services to the people. With each step they try to take more control.

Since all senior citizens accept social security, does that give the President the power to right a memo to require them to get examinations, take certain drugs, live in only designated areas or whatever else a tyrannical regime wants that gives them from the government. God Helps us

    Wellness Anyone?

What do we think about Wellness?  It is quite simple, Americans aren’t very healthy.

    1. Our diets don’t consist of nutritious foods
    2. We don’t drink enough water
    3. We don’t get the recommended daily exercise
    4. Most of us lead stressful lifestyles
    5. Our hectic lifestyles cut into our sleep time

We need to change! We need to take personal responsibility for your own well being.  We need to think of WELLNESS as part of our lifestyle! Our daily ife!

Can we prevent…so we don’t have to treat!

    Some facts:

    • 80 million people have some form of heart disease (American Heart Association)
    • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will have cancer in his or her lifetime (National Cancer Institute)
    • Over 20 million children and adults have diabetes (American Diabetes Association)
    • 64% of adults are overweight (Centers for disease control and prevention)
    • About 59% of adults do not engage in any vigorous physical activity (Center for disease control and prevention)

Our nations health care expenditures are skyrocketing. The U.S. government has spent billions trying to fighting a war on cancer, finding a cure for heart disease, and many other diseases. So, our conclusion is disease is easier to prevent than it is to cure. The FDA is recommending that we eat 7-13 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables everyday. That’s not an easy thing to do and most of us find it virtually impossible.

So…now what do we do? Change our NUTRITION Patterns! Our WATER CONSUMPTION! Our EXERCISE level! Our DOWN TIME!

WE NEED TO BE ACCOUNTABLE TO OURSELVES…BUT WE CAN ALL HELP EACH OTHER!
