At a press conference this afternoon, Progressive Caucus Co-chair, Representative Lynn Woolsey, unveiled a new CBO score that shows that the public option saves the federal budget money. This is something supporters see as a big selling point as attention shifts to the Federal deficit. Representative Woolsey and 121 other democratic cosigners released a bill to establish a “robust” public insurance option within the exchanges established are part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590) passed last March.
The program would be very similar to the public option that passed out of Ways and Means and Education and Labor last year, but adjusted so it’s offered alongside private insurance options within the state exchanges. The rates would be Medicare plus 5 percent.
