While I typical say it is the state of wellbeing that people experience when a healthy lifestyle has been achieved. As a health & wellness coach, I have been trained to understand it is more of a process requiring education, commitment to action in spite of repeated failures to live a healthy and productive life.
As defined by the UCDavis Student Health & Counseling service, “wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth. …a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.“
Is being Fit, the same as Wellness?
Most, if not all of the health & wellness community would agree, your level of physical fitness matters. Unfortunately most Americans, stopped attempting fitness goals in high school gym class. The simple fact is , based on the latest research I have read supports the key principle of the Core4-Plus Wellcare Plan. So, how do we define fitness? Consider this…
“Scientists have identified what they think could be a simple, practical test to predict people’s heart health, and it’s about as quick as saying, “Drop and give me 40″….In a new study led by Harvard
University, researchers found that men’s ability to do more than 40 push-ups was linked with significantly reduced risk of serious heart problems over the next 10 years – in some cases slashing risk by as much as 96 percent….”Our findings provide evidence that push-up capacity could be an easy, no-cost method to help assess cardiovascular disease risk in almost any setting,” says occupational medicine resident Justin Yangfrom the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health… “Surprisingly, push-up capacity was more strongly associated with cardiovascular disease risk than the results of submaximal treadmill tests.“-Peter Docrell, via Science Alert.
In conclusion…Wellness is a state of mental and physical well-being achieved thru an active process of education, commitment and physical activity which must include, exercise, healthy eating, adequate hydration & restorative rest. My experience has taught me that any worth doing requires a plan. In this case, a wellcare plan.
How do you define wellness, and how are you doing on your own wellcare plan?
