Sciences Daily reported out on an American Academy of Neurology study on Sugar Sweeteners recently. Here a my takeaway from this report/article.

Study Summary – “For people with multiple sclerosis (MS), drinking around 290 calories per day of soda or other sugar-sweetened beverages, or the equivalent of about two cans of non-diet soda, may be tied to more severe symptoms and a higher level of disability compared to people with MS who seldom consume sugar-sweetened beverages, according to a preliminary study.

To put an exclamation point on their findings, “[t]he study found that participants who consumed the largest

amounts of sugar-sweetened beverages were five times more likely to have severe disability than people who seldom drank sugar-sweetened beverages.” Clearly sugar-sweeten beverages are not healthy for people with MS, but I would add that likely  is true for anyone with any of the auto-immune diseases. Such as diabetes, lupus, crohn’s, thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s) and RA. Fact is, my doctor has recommended that I cut out sweeteners as part of my treatment plan to recover from Lyme Disease.

This is not surprising news with all the research focused on a weaken the microbiome (gut). These artificial sweeteners appear to reduce your gut’s “good bacteria of the microbiome by up to 50%” and “raise gut pH levels.” Based on the evidence as chronic illnesses rise, I cannot stress enough how important it is to get the message out to reduce or better yet eliminate sweetened drinks, but with sugar or artificial sweeteners.
